From ASP to Web Services
Internet changes everything and the software industry is no exception:
business model of ISV (Independent Software Vendors) is shifting rapidly to
a service paradigm and in the future applications will be delivered through Application Service Providers (ASPs).
Main advantages of the new business model are:
- no one-time upront fees for licensing packages
- concentration on core business (EDP cost reduction)
- software maintenance assured by ISVs directly through Internet
- extremely simplified systems deployment
- for vendors, global marketing reach and opportunities.
A major concern is the security issue: customers don't want to move sensitive data to servers outside their premises, fearing unauthorized access and other risks.
A solution to this problem is separating programs from data (concept of distributed data-bases): programs reside on Web servers and data on local PCs. Customers access remote programs that operate on local data, so security is guaranteed while still preserving the advantages of the traditional ASP model.
This programs/data unbundling is a different way of looking at the ASP model and a more appropriate definition is Web Service:
clients access the Web server, lauch the application and manipulate local data instead of operating exclusively on the remote server (classic ASP).
